Panakam is a very simple drink that helps to cool down our body during hot summer days. I love this panagam recipe during my childhood days where colas and sodas were not familiar. My husband asked me to do some mojito or cocktail to beat the heat during summer but I became nostalgic and tried this sweet and refreshing panakam recipe.
Panakam is also called Panagam. This recipe is prepared for the famous Hindu festival “Rama Navami”.One cannot avoid panagam in Rama Navami recipes. It pulls very simple ingredients that are always available in your pantry Jaggery, Cardamom, Sukku (Ginger Powder), Lemon Juice. I usually skip or add a very little quantity of lemon juice however if you love the tangy flavor you can increase according to your liking.
Jaggery: Jaggery a natural source of sweetener and Contains vitamin B.
Caradamom : A pure anti oxident.Gives a unique and refreshing flavor.
Sukku or Ginger Powder: The health benefits of ginger are well known. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help to improve immunity and better digestion. It is indeed comforting to sip to soothe a sore throat.
Lemon juice: Lemons are a good source of vitamin C. Lemon improves digestion and moreover, it adds more flavor to the drink.
On the whole, the simple drink is packed with nutrients and a great substitute for sugar-loaded desserts. A glass of Panakam after your lunch will make your meal complete. This recipe can also be kept in the refrigerator before serving however I do not prefer to refrigerate. I like to have a drink with natural chillness and refreshing flavor.

How to make Panakam Recipe?
- In a mixing bowl add half a cup of crushed Jaggery.
- To this mix about 2 cups of water. Mix until the jaggery dissolves.
- Add 2 tbsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp of cardamom powder, 1 tsp of ginger powder, and a pinch of salt.
- Give a quick mix and strain using a strainer.
- Then pour in a glass and beat the heat.
- You can add crushed pepper or chillis to make it a little spicy. Add tulsi or basil leaves if you are preparing for Rama Navami.
- Crush and add some mint leaves to make it more refreshing.

Panakagam can be prepared upfront and refrigerated one day before serving. I always suggest preparing fresh panakam before your meal.
